What are your favourite courses?

Southern Dunes, Orlando, Florida

At what age did you begin golf?

I first started playing golf seriously when I was 10 years old with a handicap of 40, I never could have imagined where my golf has got to now, along with the great opportunities I have been lucky enough to have and experience long the way. By the age of 14 I was playing off a 4 handicap and representing Wales in the U16 squad.

Has your game always been as good?

I then had a couple of years where my form dipped and needed to make a change to my game to progress my game forward, that is when I went to Dennis Pugh's Sussex College of Golf at Lindfield golf club. I left the college off a +1 handicap and a completely different player, this is when I realised that the route of going to an American university was the next step for me to improve my golf and further my education.

Who has been your biggest influence / mentor?

I went to Webber International University in Orlando, Florida where I met the most influential person in my golfing career and is the reason where my game is today, and his name is Donny Lee and he is my swing and short game coach. Donny has helped simplify my game and taken me to the next level.

When did you take the step to turn professional?

I graduated from Webber International University in May 2013 with a degree in Sports Management then followed up by turning professional the next month. However injury struck 6 weeks into my professional career with me having to sit out for most of the year due to hip surgery to fix an ongoing problem. After having a short but good taste of the pro game the injury made my hunger grow. My first tournament back I shot second round 66 to claim T2nd. This was a great spring board for me for the 2014 season.

How has the 2014 season been for you?

For the 2014 season my plan was to start off small with 1 round events and work my way up with European tour q school if my form was good. I won in just my second event at Goodwood golf club on 'The players tour', I knew it was time to go to the next level and play 2 round events on the 'Jamega tour'. My game really blossomed playing the season on this tour due to tough competition and the tournaments were run like extremely well giving a feel of a big tour. I finished in the top 20 on their order of merit with just playing 10 events and finishing in the top 10 in 6 occasions, I felt that this for warranted a trip to European tour q school.

I played at Frilford heath blue course for stage 1 of q school where I shot scores of 72,72,69,69 for a 6 under par total and qualifying for a spot in stage 2 in Spain. I played stage at Lumine golf club where I shot scores of 70,70,73,68 to finish 3 under par for the tournament, however it was not good enough to progress to the final stage of q school this year. This ended the year with a stroke average of 71.9 which is my best season average to date.

What’s next?

For 2015 I am looking to use my first full year as another springboard to push me up through the rankings to make it to the European tour.

Greg is currently looking for sponsors to enable him to reach the European Tour. For further information please contact greghughes06@hotmail.co.uk or on Twitter @greghughes90
