The 17-year-old from Burhill set up her victory in the first round when she shot a course record of eight-under par 67 on the New Course. It included an eagle, six birdies and 11 pars.

It was both her lowest-ever score and her first bogey-free round and she commented: “It was really nice – I enjoyed it!” During the course of the round she holed a couple of 25-footers, but generally her accurate approach shots left her with very makeable putts and on one par three she hit it to within 2ft.

Prior scored three-over 77 on the Old Course in the second round for a total of five-under and a two shot win from Dulcie Sverdloff of Essex. Tara Watters of Middlesex was third on two-under par while Lincolnshire’s Emily Slater was one-under.

“I’ve always wanted to win this competition,” said Prior, who is on a roll. The previous week she set another course record of six-under par at Lindfield in Sussex, where she plays her college golf.

She went on to tackle a different challenge – teeing up, by invitation, alongside the men in a EuroPro event at her home course. Next week she’s off to Germany to represent England Golf in the German girls’ open at St Leon Rot. Prior has already won at the Fairhaven Trophies this season and was in England's winning team at last year's girls' Home Internationals.
