Gilligan races home at Epsom

Lingfield Park pro’s 67 takes him into the winner’s enclosure

Gary Gilligan (Lindfield Park) shot a three-under-par 67* to claim the Epsom Pro-Am title and a handy £850 into the bargain.

A delighted Gilligan said: “I’ve been putting in a lot of work on the practice ground and this win is testament to that. The course was very challenging as usual, but in great condition and both the club and The PGA team laid on a very good day’s golf for everyone playing.”

He shaded out the 68 of West Hill’s David Callaway, but only because Callaway managed to notch up a triple bogey seven at the 18th. While both started at the 11th, the two players were the only ones to shoot under par on a bouncy and blustery day.

Gilligan managed five birdies on his way round, with three on the trot at the fifth, sixth, and seventh. Callaway was four-under after seven holes, but this run was rudely interrupted at the 18th, although he came back with two more on the way home to help repair the damage.

Despite being pipped to the individual win, Callaway earned a bonus in the team event for helping bring home his amateur players to pip Craig Cowper’s team on countback.
