England Golf has named its team for the European Senior Ladies' Team Championship to be played at the Blacksearama Golf Resort in Bulgaria on Tuesday, 3 - Saturday, 7 September.
The team comprises Caroline Berry, Paula Carver, Jackie Foster, Aileen Greenfield, Helen Lowe and Julie Wheeldon and is captained by Debbie Richards (Burhill and Surrey).
A total of 16 teams from across Europe will be playing in the event which features two rounds of stroke play in which the five best scores out of six count towards the team score. The stroke play results will determine the seeded order for the match play which will be divided into two flights of eight teams each. Individual matches will be decided from the results of one foursome and four singles.
The defending champions are Germany who beat host Belgium at Mont Gami Golf Club. England have won the championship once at Gut Altentann in Austria in 2014 and have been runners-up five times in 2006, ’07, ’10, ’15 and most recently in 2017 in Slovakia.
The Players
Caroline Berry (Bromborough, Cheshire) won the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship for a second time earlier this year at Enville Golf Club in Staffordshire, having previously also claimed the title at Littlestone in 2010. She was also tied sixth at the English Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play.
Paula Carver (Worthing, Sussex) was runner-up to Berry in the English Senior Women’s Amateur and tied-ninth at the English Senior Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play.
Jackie Foster (Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire) is a two-time winner of the English Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play in 2016 and 2017. She finished second behind Greenfield in this year’s championship at St Enodoc and also reached the semi-finals of this year's English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. She has been a regular member of English Senior teams over the last few years, including at last year’s Senior Women’s Home Internationals at Burnham & Berrow.
Aileen Greenfield (Pyecombe, Sussex) birdied the last two holes to win this year’s English Senior Women’s Stroke Play Championship at St Enodoc. She lost in a play-off for the same title in her debut season as a senior in 2015 and was runner-up again the following year. She also won the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship in 2018.
Helen Lowe (Scraptoft, Leicestershire and Rutland) won the English Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play in both 2015 and 2018 and was eighth in the championship this year. She led the qualifiers at this year’s English Senior Women’s Championship.
Julie Wheeldon (Wakefield, Yorkshire) was tied-third in the English Senior Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship. She was fifth in qualifying for the English Senior Women’s Amateur.
