Burhill Golf Club has been announced as a finalist for the Sustainability Award at the 2026 England Golf Awards, recognising more than a decade of leadership in environmental stewardship and climate positive course management.

A GEO-certified® club since 2014, Burhill has embedded sustainability into every aspect of how it manages, maintains, and shares its historic Surrey estate.

Between 2019 and 2024, the club achieved a 42% reduction in operational carbon emissions, before transitioning to 100% renewable electricity and gas in 2025.

Independent land carbon analysis now shows that Burhill’s diverse habitats — including mature woodlands, wetlands, and species rich grasslands — sequester more carbon annually than the club emits from energy use, marking a significant milestone on its journey toward Net Zero.

In partnership with The R&A’s Sustainable Agronomy Service, Burhill has transformed its playing surfaces to be more resilient and lower input, reducing reliance on water, fertilisers, and pesticides.

The club has also expanded naturalised roughs and enhanced wildlife corridors, supporting thriving populations of birds, pollinators, and native flora. Burhill’s award winning water strategy has been another standout achievement.

Through an Exceptional Flow Licence and a Sustainable Irrigation system, the club captures excess winter river water for use during drier months — protecting local waterways while strengthening drought resilience in a changing climate.

Beyond the course, Burhill has delivered biodiversity net gain projects, created new wetlands, achieved zero waste to landfill, and built strong community partnerships that promote environmental awareness and outdoor learning.

The club remains committed to sharing its insights across the golf industry, helping others accelerate their own sustainability journeys.

Being named a finalist reflects Burhill’s belief that golf can be a force for positive environmental impact — and its determination to lead by example as the sport embraces a more sustainable future.
