LADIES CRAN-K IT UP!

A high-performing pair and the champion of Costa Brava – Cranleigh Golf & Country Club’s lady members are doing the club proud following success in various national competitions. Sheena Foley (62) and Priscilla Jones (65) were one of just 16 women pairs to qualify for the final four rounds of the world’s biggest amateur golf competition, the Daily Mail Foursomes, held at Slaley Hall in Northumberland. More than 119,000 golfers from more than 1,100 clubs across England, Scotland and Wales entered the competition, which comprised seven gruelling knock-out rounds to qualify for the last 16. The retired pair overcame Guildford, Clandon Regis, Rusper, Slinfold, Cottesmore and Liphook golf clubs throughout their journey to Slaley Hall and posted some impressive scores throughout. Foley, who plays off a handicap of 12, and 18-handicapper Jones, narrowly missed out on the quarter-final of the event after battling through terrible weather conditions, and an extremely wet course, to lose on the final hole to Playgolf Colchester. But that didn’t dampen the pair’s memorable weekend. Foley said: “We are so thrilled to have reached the final and take part in the most high-profile event we’ve ever played in; it was an unforgettable experience. “Being members of Cranleigh undoubtedly helped us achieve this. We both have regular lessons with the pro, Charlie Tetlow, and as it’s such a difficult course it means our handicaps travel well, so we were definitely prepared for some of the tough matches and fabulous pairings we came up against.” Fiona Phelps also flew the Surrey golf club’s flag as she claimed the Taste of Costa Brava title – the second time in as many years that the competition has been won by a Cranleigh member. Phelps overcame the battle of the sexes to become the only female qualifier from eight events hosted at courses across Surrey, Hampshire, Sussex and Kent. Around 1,000 amateur golfers took part, with the winners from each event treated to a three-day trip to the Costa Brava, where she was later crowned the 2019 champion. Her handicap was cut from 28 to 26 after scoring an impressive 42 Stableford points at the qualifying event held at Cranleigh, so Phelps jetted off to Spain two weeks later with her new handicap. The final was played over two competitive rounds: one on PGA Catalunya’s Stadium Course, renowned as one of Europe’s best, where she shot an exceptional score of 36 points, followed by 29 points at Empordà, to win by a total of seven points and retain Cranleigh’s crown. She said: “Having been a member at Cranleigh for five-and-a-half years, it’s always been said that our handicaps travel well – and I’m so glad that I got to prove it in Spain. “I never expected to win, I was just happy to take part in a really exciting competition, and my first overseas event, but carrying the trophy back home certainly felt good – especially considering I was up against all men with lower handicaps than me!” Cranleigh Golf & Country Club gives golfers the best facilities in which to thrive: home to a beautiful, challenging par-68, parkland course, which measures 5,644 yards, as well as excellent practice facilities, including a newly refurbished driving range and putting green. The club’s head PGA golf professional, Charlie Tetlow, also offers expert tuition at competitive prices. Alex Milne, Cranleigh’s deputy general manager, said: “We are incredibly proud of Fiona, Sheena and Priscilla for their achievements over the last couple of months and it just goes to show how our fantastic course and facilities are helping golfers perform to the best of their abilities. “We have a close-knit membership here at Cranleigh and I know a few of the other members have been very supportive of the ladies during their competitions through various group chats and even caddying. This friendly atmosphere is what makes the club so special.” Cranleigh members not only have access to its stunning 18-hole course and golf facilities, but also can enjoy the state-of-the-art gym, 18m swimming pool, steam room, spa and sauna, as well as regular exercise classes in modern studios, tennis courts and a crèche.
